Refrigerant Change for 2020 Could Affect You

The refrigerant R22 is used in most air conditioners and heat pumps that are more than 15 years old. R22 is no longer produced, and starting January 1, 2020, it won’t be available.

The end of R22 will mean many homeowners will have to replace a heat pump or air conditioner if it leaks refrigerant. Repairing the leak and recharging it with R22 won’t be an option, and most older systems aren’t compatible with newer R410A refrigerant.
