Gas Furnace Performance

If you’re wondering how the gas valve performance affects heating, here’s an overview. A modulating gas valve burns from about 40% to 100% capacity based on the heating needs of the moment. They run on fairly low capacity most of the time. The result is longer cycles with more gentle heating and precisely balanced temperatures.

Two-stage models offer 65% or 100% stages in most models, and run at low capacity unless you call for more heat or temps drop quickly – then they run at full capacity to warm your home. They offer better climate control than single-stage models but not as good as modulating furnaces. With a single-stage gas valve, you may notice slight temperature fluctuations between or during heating cycles. Modulating furnaces are the most expensive, and there are currently only a few on the market. Single-stage models are most affordable.
