Transformers

The primary purpose of a transformer is to alter a supply (or primary load) voltage to another desired voltage (sometimes called the secondary or load side). A second purpose is for the transformer to maintain the same voltage characteristics from the primary side to the secondary side, but to isolate the secondary side to protect the load or control circuitry of a unit.

There are two types of transformers:

  • Open transformers have visible and open electrical connections.  These should only be used in enclosed areas that can protect from people being shocked or the connections being damaged.
  • Totally Enclosed transformers are usually in a metal or plastic enclosure and can be mounted most anywhere.
