Bypass Humidifier | Duct Humidifier
A Bypass humidifier, or in duct humidifiers as they are commonly called, are small boxes that are mounted to the side of your HVAC duct system. There are a couple different styles of duct humidifiers and the most common type are bypass. Just like a whole house air cleaner, they can be easily added after the time of the full system installation.
The name of the bypass actually comes from the way it works. There is a small box that mounts to your duct system with a pad inside of it. On one side of the box, air is diverted from your duct system and through the bypass humidifier. On the other end, the freshly treated air re-enters your duct, mixes with the other forced air and is sent through your home.
When the system turns on, a light stream of water soaks the pad inside the self contained humidifer, and when the air in the duct system is routed through the bypass humidifier, it naturally picks up the moisture from the soaked pad.
Installation of a bypass humidifier is a simple project for the DIY homeowner to take on, and as long as you have some standard hand tools around, you can install a bypass unit in just a couple hours or less!
