Here's an overview of Trane HVAC products including furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioners. The Trane Company is one of the premier manufacturers in the world for HVAC equipment. It makes both commercial and residential units, and it’s best residential lines are usually rated in the top five for all brands.

The company was founded in 1885 in Lacrosse, Wisconsin by James Trane who invented low-pressure heating equipment known as the Trane Vapor Heating System. When son Reuben returned from college in 1910 with a degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing began. The company was officially incorporated in 1913 and has been at the forefront of the industry ever since.

The Trane Company was acquired by American Standard in 1984 and Trane was chosen as the name for the new company. Both brands were continued and remain among the industry’s best. The Ingersoll-Rand Corporation bought Trane in 2008.

Trane Residential HVAC Equipment

Trane makes one of the largest lines in the industry. Equipment includes:

  • Gas and oil furnaces
  • Condensing units for central air conditioners and heat pumps
  • Air handlers
  • Package units it calls all-in-one units
  • Ductless systems
  • Air cleaning and air filtering equipment
  • Geothermal heat pumps
  • Humidifiers
  • Thermostats and controls

Here’s an overview of the various series from Trane, starting with the top of the line.

Trane XL Series: Trane’s best competes with Carrier Infinity, Dave Lennox Signature, Bryant Evolution and a few other top series. It is virtually identical to the American Standard Platinum Series.

The XL Series features high efficiency, modulating or staged heating and cooling and the brands best warranties which overall, rank in the top third of warranties in the industry. Most furnaces and air handlers in this series have variable-speed blowers.

Trane  XR Series: This second-tier line offers a good combination of lower prices and good efficiency. Single-stage and two-stage components are mixed in the series, so there’s something for consumers across the board.

Trane XB Series: Popular with cost-conscious buyers who still want the Trane brand, this series is the least efficient and the most affordable. Warranties are as short as 5 years on some heat pumps and ACs.

Reasons to Buy Trane HVAC Equipment

Those who choose top of the line Trane equipment are typically homeowners willing to pay higher prices for the reliability Trane offers. It has a top-5 service record in the industry. The best Trane systems are a good choice if you want top-quality equipment and you intend to stay in your home for more than 10 years to get good value from your purchase. The brand has excellent resale value too, as you might expect. Even when buying Trane's best, it's important to have the unit or system installed by a qualified contractor in order to ensure it will run as efficiently and durably as it should.

The Trane XR and Trane XB Series are selected when very high efficiency isn’t as important, but cost savings are. See our HVAC reviews for more information on individual components from Trane.
