@ Matty -

Yup. Contractors pay an annual fee to be a part of the Sears program. All you get is a Carrier dealer, who has agreed to pay the fee to get leads from Sears as well.

No different than Home Depot and the agreement with Trane dealers.

Dane here from Nola.

We have a 80k Infinity furnace & 3-ton Infinity Heat Pump system installed in our home. LOVE it!

Like the author says - if you go for it, go all the way and make sure you get a matched system from a carrier dealer.

After sitting for a while and all cooled down half of the time i turn on the heater the following occurs:

When I turn on the heater from the brand new thermostat th heater fan comes on but the fire doesn't ignite from the pilot light. Normally when it does ignite you can hear a whoosh sound but when this problem occurs it this sound doesn't occur. I have three mechanics replace the circuit board in the furnace but the problem just starts up again when it wants to. When it is in this mode it will cycle on and off every couple of minutes but never ignite.

The heater is at least 20 years old but the last mechanics said it was good heater (Trane) and is still in good shape.

Thanks for your help!

It's hard to say how long the Goodman units (GMV95) will last, but I can say so far to good. It's quiet, and seems to run well. You can find these units on eBay for a really good price too (rather than getting screwed by your local contractor). As well, if you are a DIY person, they are pretty easy to install.
In summer, get a gas guy to come over and unhook your existing furnace ($50). Unhook old furnace and put in new one (you'll need some sked 636 pipe) and a few pieces for adjustment (about $200 worth). The manual tells you most of what you need to know (and of course, be careful!).
Call gas guy/gal to hook up new one ($50). If you're handy, you're done for about $2k all in.

This is a great resource. For someone like myself who lives near the desert in California, a 30% energy bill reduction would be a blessing! Thanks!

we had water start puddling in the pan of our heater downstairs. Turned out to be a bad condensate pump. my husband was shocked at just how easy it was to replace - we ordered one, it was delivered in 2 days, and we simply unplugged the brokwen pump and plugged the new one in! 5 minutes later... done!

Thank you for the GREAT tips on this! ~ Jill

If you have new wood floor installed a humidifier is a must, so you won't damage the wood. Also humidifiers will not just add humidity it will save you energy.

Just being real... but if you WANT a TRANE or American Standard, you should probably use one of their preferred dealers. Yes, they mark it up... but if you get 3-4 local quotes, you will get a good price.

If you really want to go the lowest cost route - find a local guy who installs Goodman, Payne or Bryant. The equipment quality is not the same but you will save thousands...

3 ton Trane AC/Furnace installed - $7500
3 ton Bryant AC/Furnace installed $4500
