Best Heat Pumps Under 2000 for 2017

What are the best heat pumps less than $2000? There are a lot of heat pump models with an average cost below $2K, but many are cheap. The top 2017 affordable heat pumps in this list are quality units that will deliver 15-20 years of durable use when installed by an experienced and qualified contractor and maintained over their lifetime.

Heat pumps range in capacity from 18,000 or 24,000 BTU up to 60,000 BTU. The term “ton” is used for capacity too, with 12,000 BTU per ton, so 1.5 to 5.0 tons of capacity. Since there is a range of sizes, we use $2,000 as the limit for the average cost of the model.

2017 Best Heat Pumps Less Than $2,000

These heat pumps will deliver reliable heating and cooling when properly installed and maintained. With the occasional minor repair or two, each should last 17-20 years.

1. Trane XR15 Heat Pump

  • 16 SEER/9.5 HSPF (Energy Star)
  • Single-stage compressor
  • Trane ClimaTuff compressor is one
  • Trane XR15 price: $1,250-$2,400

This is a single-stage model from among the quality Trane heat pumps, so it doesn’t deliver temperatures that are quite as balanced as a two-stage heat pump provides. It does a very good job with dehumidification, and its outstanding quality put it at the top of our list. Trane’s warranty on this unit is 10 years on all parts, a warranty that is average for the industry.

2. Heil HSH5 QuietComfort 15 Heat Pump

  • 19 SEER/9.0 HSPF (Energy Star)
  • Single-stage operation
  • Dual fuel capable for climates with freezing temperatures
  • Heil HSH5 QuietComfort 15 price: $1,500-$2,450

Heil is owned by International Comfort Products, which is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, the parent company of Carrier and Bryant. The Heil lineup differs from those brands, but it is identical to units made by other ICP brands Day & Night, Keep Rite, Tempstar, Comfortmaker and Arcoaire. Heil offers excellent warranties, though not as good as Amana (but better than Carrier and Bryant). This unit is backed by a 5-year No Hassle warranty on the compressor, so if the compressor fails in that time, Heil will replace the entire condensing unit (heat pump), not just the compressor. A 10-year warranty covers all other parts.

3. Amana ASZ16 heat pump

  • 16 SEER/9.0 HSPF (Energy Star)
  • Single-stage compressor
  • Copeland diagnostics, one of the better brands in the industry
  • Amana ASZ16 price: $1,400-$,2600

Amana was a Goodman brand for quite some time until Daikin bought Goodman in 2012 and acquired Goodman too. Daikin has upgraded the Amana lineup while keeping the best-in-class warranties. This unit is covered by a lifetime compressor warranty – if it ever fails, Daikin/Amana will replace the entire heat pump, not just the compressor. All other parts are backed by a 10-year warranty.

4. Lennox Elite Series XP14

  • 16 SEER/9.5 HSPF (Energy Star)
  • Single-stage compressor
  • Lennox XP14 price: $1,250-$2,550

The Lennox XP25 is the most efficient heat pump made by a major brand – or most any brand. This model is an efficient single-stage furnace with decent efficiency. The warranty is not impressive: 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on all other parts.

5. Rheem Classic Series RP14 Heat Pump

  • 15 SEER/9.0 HSPF
  • Single-stage heating and cooling
  • Composite base pan dampens noise and is corrosion-free
  • Rheem RP14 price: $1,150-$2,350

The Ruud RP14 is the same model as the Rheem RP14. These brands are owned by Paloma Industries along with multiple other brands. The two heat pumps are very basic but built well and are durable. At a starting price of $1,150, there’s good value in this heat pump.

Save Money on Quality Installation

You won’t save money if the installation is bad. In fact, improper installation will cost you money in the form of inefficient performance and more mechanical failure. You can get good installation and a reasonable cost too if you request estimates from local installers that know they’re competing for the work. It takes a few weeks to develop a list from companies used by friends and neighbors, weed out inexperienced crews and interview the rest. A quick way to find a qualified contractor is to use our 3 Free Estimate service. The crews are among the best in your area, and they know they’re competing for your business. There’s no cost or obligation for using the service.
