Best Heat Pumps Under $2,000 in 2016

A mid-range heat pump made with quality components is a good choice:

  • Where the climate is moderate all year without extreme cold or extreme heat
  • For part-time locations such as a vacation home or guest apartment when lower upfront cost is more important to you than high efficiency
  • When you plan to move in the next few years and won’t get the long-term value of a more efficient but costlier heat pump

On the other hand, heat pumps with mid-range efficiency are not a good choice:

  • Where summers are long and hot, and a high-efficiency heat pump will pay you back quickly through lower utility bills
  • Where freezing temperatures that render a heat pump ineffective are frequent – unless you install a dual fuel system in which a heat pump does the heating in temperatures above freezing and a gas furnace does the heating in very cold temperatures

With those factors on the table, let’s look at the best 2016 heat pumps in the affordable, mid-range class. There is overlap with our Best Central Air Conditioners Under $2,000 for 2016 because of the similarity in the two types of equipment. Some of these models are the heat pump version of the ACs on that list. A heat pump differs only in that it can reverse the flow of refrigerant in cold weather so that it gathers heat outside and dumps it inside. That, of course, is the opposite of what it does during summer air conditioning cycles. Note: SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, is a measurement of air conditioning efficiency; HSPF, or Heating Season Performance Factor, is a measurement of heating efficiency.
