Top Rated Oil Furnaces 2015

Oil furnaces are becoming more efficient, and many are equipped with variable-speed blowers to increase indoor comfort throughout the year. If you’re in the market for one, here are the best 2015 oil furnaces.

If you’ve been following our annual reports, you’ll notice that some models are the same from last year; there isn’t as much change in oil furnaces year to year as there is in gas furnaces.  There are a few new models here, however.

1. Trane XV80 Oil Furnace

This is an efficient oil furnace with a quality Beckett Flame Retention burner, regarded as the best available, and a variable-speed blower motor that reduces blasts of cold air at the start of a cycle. The ceramic fiber combustion chamber offers outstanding durability. This furnace is available in downflow/horizontal, lowboy and highboy models to meet your installation requirements. Here’s an overview of what you get with the Trane XV80 furnace:

  • Efficiency: 82.6% to 85% Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) depending on model
  • Performance: Variable-speed blower
  • Capacity: 87,000 BTU output on all models
  • Warranty: Lifetime heat exchanger warranty; 10 years on all other parts

The American Standard XV oil furnace is essentially the same product. American Standard and Trane are both Ingersoll Rand companies.

2. Carrier Performance 80 CVM Oil Furnace

This is a hybrid heat model. That means you can include it in a system with a heat pump. In very cold climates like the Northeast US, the furnace will kick in automatically to take over heating when temperatures get too low for a heat pump to be efficient (around the freezing mark). A hybrid system allows you to enjoy the energy efficiency of a heat pump but still have the heating power of an oil furnace.

  • Efficiency: Up to 85.7% Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) depending on model
  • Performance: Variable-speed blower
  • Capacity: Multiple sizes available
  • Warranty: Lifetime heat exchanger warranty; 10 years on all other parts

3. Rheem Classic Series ROCB-E & ROCB-P Oil Furnaces

Rheem offers this furnace in highboy/horizontal and low-profile (lowboy) models to fit your installation requirements. It’s efficient and is offered in a range of sizes to give you the heat you need. Rheem’s warranty is about average for the industry as a whole.

  • Efficiency: 82.6% to 85% Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) depending on model
  • Performance: Variable-speed blower with an energy-saving ECM motor
  • Capacity: Three models – 60,000 to 89,000 BTU output
  • Warranty: Lifetime heat exchanger warranty; 5 years on all other parts

4. Lennox Signature SLO 185V Oil Furnace

Lennox’s best oil furnace is equipped with a variable speed blower to increase comfort. It’s built with top components such as the heavy-gauge steel heat exchanger and the efficient Beckett burner.

  • Efficiency: 85% to 87% Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) depending on model
  • Performance: Variable-speed blower
  • Capacity: Six models— 79,000 to 124,000 BTU output
  • Warranty: Lifetime heat exchanger warranty; 10 years on all other parts

5. Bryant OVL/OVM Oil Furnace

This is an efficient oil furnace with an excellent repair history and a good warranty. It is available in a variety of styles including multi-position and lowboy models. Sister company Carrier also makes OVL/OVM furnaces that are essentially the same.

  • Efficiency: OVM up to 86%  and OVL up to 86.6%Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) depending on model
  • Performance: Variable-speed blower
  • Capacity: Multiple sizes available
  • Warranty: Lifetime heat exchanger warranty; 10 years on all other parts

6. Armstrong L85UFV Oil Furnace

Like many of the top oil furnaces on the market, this one includes a variable-speed blower motor that starts on low speed and increases as the air in the combustion chamber begins to heat up.  Beckett burners are reliable and efficient. Upflow/highboy and low-profile lowboy models suitable for basements and crawlspaces are available.

  • Efficiency: 85% Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE)
  • Performance: Variable-speed blower
  • Capacity: Models with 67,000 to 118,000 maximum BTU output
  • Warranty: Lifetime heat exchanger warranty; 10 years on all other parts

The Importance of Quality Installation

As you research oil furnaces, you find that most of them are very much alike. They use the same components, all the best are about 86% efficient and they have variable-speed blowers. The “wild card” is installation.

Make sure you find a qualified contractor with good experience to handle the job. That’s why we suggest getting at least 3 written estimates before you select a heating company for the job.
