2014 HVAC Rebates Programs for California Homeowners

California is committed to cutting energy use as shown in a variety of state rebate programs for the installation of energy-efficient HVAC equipment. Here’s a look at the California energy rebates including the name and an overview of each program.

California Solar Initiative

There are several categories under this broad initiative to use solar power to heat water.

California Solar Initiative – Solar Thermal Program covers a wide range of solar-powered equipment including water heaters, space heaters, solar thermal process heat and solar pool heating. The incentives range from $18 to $25 per therm of energy saved by the use of solar power. For most equipment, that would amount to $2,500 or more per home.

California Solar Initiative – Low-Income Solar Water Heating Rebate Program is aimed at low-income and multi-family residential dwellings. The amount of the of the incentive is based on the income level of the recipient and how much energy is saved through the use of a solar water heater. Maximum single-family rebate is $3,750 while those for multi-family residential units serving low-income families is $500,000.

California Solar Initiative – Single-Family Affordable Solar Housing (SASH) Program New Solar Homes Partnership is a program that subsidizes the installation of photovoltaic equipment to generate electricity. The maximum incentive is $10,000, but the income of each applicant is considered when formulating the specific rebate.

Energy Upgrade California

This California state energy rebate program is aimed at the installation of furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, HVAC insulation, building insulation, and energy-efficient windows. Residential and multi-family residential homeowners are eligible. The amount of the rebate ranges from $1,000 to $4,000 depending on the upgrades that are made.

Self-Generation Incentive Program

The goal of this program is to support alternative forms of energy generation rather than taking it from the grid. A wide range of technologies are eligible for rebates including wind, fuel cells, biogas and pressure reduction turbines.

Here’s a list of the amounts of the potential rebates:

  • Wind: $1.13/W
  • Waste Heat to Power: $1.13/W
  • Pressure Reduction Turbine: $1.13/W
  • Internal Combustion Engine (CHP): $0.46/W
  • Microturbine (CHP): $0.46/W
  • Gas Turbine (CHP): $0.46/W
  • Advanced Energy Storage: $1.62/W
  • Biogas: $1.62/W
  • Fuel Cell (CHP or Electric Only): $1.83/W

When a California supplier of Advanced Energy Storage technologies is used, the rebate is increased by 20%.

Utility Company Rebates

Most of the energy producers in the state of California offer utility rebates for the installation of energy-efficient equipment and materials. As just one of dozens of examples, the Alameda Municipal Power company offers an HVAC rebate of $0.22 per kilowatt hours saved through the installation of furnaces, heat pumps and central air conditioners that use less energy.  For an average heat pump, the rebate could exceed $750.
