2014 HVAC Rebate Programs for Michigan Homeowners
Like most states, Michigan is offering homeowners incentives to install energy efficient HVAC equipment while also adding insulation and other materials that reduce energy loss throughout the year.
BetterBuildings for Michigan
This state program targets homeowners in:
- Southeast MI
- Bath and DeWitt
- Grand Rapids
- Traverse City
- Marquette
Eligible efficiency technologies include lighting, programmable thermostats, whole-building insulation and duct sealing.

Essentially, when you sign up for the program, your home is energy-audited at the reduced rate of $100. The advisor you work with then apply for and receive energy rebates from your local utility company.
Keep in mind that many of these rebates are available directly from the utility companies without going through the Better Buildings for Michigan office. However, the reduced energy audit might not be.
Michigan Utility Company Rebates
Most of power companies throughout the state support the installation of energy efficient HVAC equipment through substantial rebates. Here are two examples.
The DTE Energy (Gas) – Residential Energy Efficiency Program offers the following rebates for the installation of energy-efficient equipment and materials that conserve energy within the home:
- Air Sealing: up to $150
- Floor Insulation: $50 – $100
- Bandjoist Insulation: $50 – $100
- Above Grade Wall/Knee Wall Insulation: $250
- Crawl Space/Wall/Band Joist Insulation: $100
- Ceiling Insulation: $125 – $250
- Window Replacement: $30/window; $60/picture window or sliding glass door
- Programmable Thermostat: $10-$20
- Refrigerator Recycling: $40
- Clothes Washer: $25 – $50
- Dehumidifier and A/C Recycling: $20
- Home Energy Audit: Up to $75
- Furnace: Up to $500
- Furnace Tune-up: $50
- Boiler: $1000 – $1250
- Storage Water Heater: $75
- Tankless Water Heater: $100
The Consumers Energy (Electric) – Residential Energy Efficiency Program offers these rebates:
- CFL Lighting: Retailer Instant Discount
- Programmable Thermostat: $10
- Central A/C and Heat Pumps: $150 – $250
- Central A/C Tune up: $50
- Ground Source Heat Pump: $200-$300
- Room A/C: $25
- Dehumidifier: $25
- ECM Blower: $100
- Refrigerator Recycling: $30
- Clothes Washer: $25-$50
- Windows: $2/sq. ft.
- Building Insulation: $20-$300/section
