American Standard Gas/Electric Hybrid Heat Package Systems

With hybrid heat systems, often called dual fuel systems, you’ve got the choice in cool weather of heating with the heat pump or the gas furnace. Most homeowners program the system to have the furnace take over once temps fall into the mid-30s, since a heat pump can’t produce enough heat when it is below freezing outside. The system will automatically switch back to heat pump mode, which is more economical, when temperatures outside rise again.

Choosing your American Standard Packaged System

The AC only models have a fairly limited application in locations with a secondary heat source or no need for heat. The gas packs are the most affordable of the other systems, and are good for cold climates. Keep in mind, however, that heat pump heat costs less than gas heat, so you’ll pay less for the equipment but will see higher heating bills than if you choose a heat pump or hybrid model.

The heat pump package units are ideal for areas without extremely cold weather since a heat pump doesn’t function effectively when temperatures are below freezing. The hybrid duel fuel systems are especially useful in cold climates but will help lower energy use and costs in any climate. With a hybrid heat system, the heat pump typically heats 70-85% of the time, depending on the climate, with the gas furnace heating the remainder of the time.
