And normally furnaces are measures in BTU's, not tons (air conditioners and heat pumps are often measured by tons). In general Goodman has a bad reputation, but their quality does appear to be moving in the correct direction. The highest thought of brands tend to be Carrier, Trane, and Lennox, although nearly all companies make a quality furnace these days.

Marisa,

Not knowing your exact specs for your home I would think that is too high. Most installers are going to 4" thick media filters, but the size of the filters can vary a little.

Don that is usually contingent on how your venting into your furnace is situated. This seemed high. Any thoughts? Is the Goodman a good brand, or should we go with a Carrier or Lennox?

We got a quote of $8000 to install a 3.5 ton variable Goodman gas furnace for our 1700 sq ft home in California. I just moved into a house with a Carrier Infinity 96 furnace. It is having intermittent problems (late at night) where the unit starts up but the fan doesn’t seem to kick in fully but the burner stays on and the unit heats up rapidly and begins to emit smoke from the vents. I can typically get to the unit are shut it down when the smell occurs (before the smoke is produced). I can’t repeat the problem with the repair guy here and so, they claim nothing’s wrong (the fire department would have to disagree on that point). Has anyone ever experienced this, and if so, what was the diagnosis?Take your thermostat into diagnostic mode and check for Fault 37 - Heater stuck on. That happens to my Infinity furnace sometimes when we get a brownout or a power spike. It will usually re-set (correct) itself within about 30 minutes if you just leave the furnace or A/C on.The Infinity seems to be a pretty good furnace, but you've got to keep the connectors on on the controller PCB clean.

Peter says:<br

The system needs to be installed with its matching evaporator coil and outdoor unit whether a heat pump (hybrid) or variable or 2 stage compressor. This machine when properly installed has many very nice features such as variable staging gas valve, variable speed blower motor, thermidistat, and so much more when the full system is installed and done properly. Your temp is much more accurate, no over shooting, humidity control makes a huge difference in how the air (feels) no cold and clammy, its motor ramping is very nice as it slowly and efficiently meets your set points it can control up to 8 different zones making it not over work where heat or cooling is not needed at the time. These are just a few of the many things the Infinity system can do. BTW I am not even a Carrier dealer but have read and researched it quite a bit and also went to school to learn about the ins and outs of repairing them. One helluva system. Just don't short change yourself by not going all out. If you are not going to do the whole system there are many other options by many brands that can save you alot of money and do most of what the Infinity can do. Just not all of them and those few are the ones that really give you the ultimate in Indoor Air Quality. Do your research and call your Carrier distributor in your area a find out who is the ( best) at this particular system it needs a very knowledgeable installation and service crew to get it fine tuned. Good Luck and enjoy the savings and quality of air delivery. Again NO short cuts, air cleaner, steam humidification, zoning, minimum 2 stage outdoor or variable outdoor unit.. the whole deal or don't waste your money. Don't buy a Lexus with Yugo wheels and tires....

Folks, the Infinity system is an incredible system however the installation and start up are critical. We had a Carrier unit for 20 years, 8 SEER and replaced it with an Infinity 19 SEER. Our utility bills went through the roof, about double. I’ve had the installer out several times, Air Comfort (wouldn’t use them either) and a Carrier representative with no positive results. I recommend checking out the competition.
