I would steer you towards units from Heil, Rheem, Bryant, Aire-Flo or similar. Probably a better price point and still very good. I would pair that with a separate HEPA filter system and remove as much carpet from your house as you can. Hope that helps!

Charlie,

The truth is that most of the units these days are decent enough to use. As can be seen if reading other experiences above $14k-$16k is somewhat common for these units. Might not hurt to get a couple more quotes and compare them against one another. And you can even use them to get your preferred contractor to lower his price!

Mike,

$16,500 seems a little on the high side to me, but by no means way out of the ballpark. After manufacturer rebates, our total installed price for both systems is $16495.00 (outhe door). Quote was from a Carrier "Presidents Club" rated contractor. During their bid inspection, they pointed out several installation issues of our original equipment (15 year old Tranes). Lack of plenums, under-sized return ducts, poorly hung duct work in attic (basically, the original contractor did just enough to pass inspection). All of these issues would be addressed upon installation of the new equipment and are included in our bid price. Does this sound fairly reasonable? Appreciate any feedback.

We are considering 2 complete Carrier Infinity 17 systems (Condenser, Gas Furnace, Evap) for our 3200 s.f., 2-story home in Phoenix, AZ area. Reading over your discussion lists illustrates some problems I have. My system was installed about a year ago by a reputable, well known installer company that I have been familiar with over 30 years although had not used for any service before. I trusted them too much. Here is what happened to me: I called them to fix my old system that was leaking water. They agreed to replace the Evaporator because the drip pan had rusted out. After trying for awhile, they could not replace it. So I discussed that I would like to have a Carrier Infinity System installed because the technology is in theory a great thing that should work the best of anything you can buy. I understand this technology, so I had no doubt that it would be the best. This company turned out to be liars and only installed an "Infinity" thermostat and heating plant. The Evaporator Coil installed was "Thirdy Party" unknown and the Condenser Unit installed outside was the second line Carrier "Premier" unit. So now I get a unit that is very tempermental and fragile that freezes up if you breath on it wrong, like turning up or down the thermostat a little. Then it's required to raise the temperature to 80 and set the fan to HIGH for an hour to clear the ICE out of the evaporator coil. The system indicates the faults during "freeze up" as either "change filter" or other system fatal errors and such. Clearing the ICE does work, but this is disappointing to have to do this often. I believe the system is of great quality if it was installed as a genuine "Infinity" system completely made out of "all Carrier Infinity" parts. But my installer decided to install my "Cadillac" System with a Chevy motor instead of the Cadillac motor I expected and then expected the third party evaporator to work as good as a genuine Carrier Infinity Product. I would like to discuss this directly with Carrier, but they offer no way to do this that I can find. Does anyone know how I could actually get to talk to Carrier directly about this situation? I am surprised to find that it appears that Carrier is not that proud of their products and only relies on the Installer for the customer interface on difficult issues. This is not good when you can not trust the installer. Thanks!

Ocassionally, I look in google search for answers to my “Infinity” problems as well. Here I go again:<br

We bought ours when building our home and from day one the system has not worked right. The system is only 5yrs old and the coils have been replaced, the control board has been replaced 2 times, the vent controller motors have been replaced 2 times each. The system gets a critical error at least 1 once a week where the circuit breakers have to be thrown to clear the error and when certified Carrier Tech comes to repair they can not find anything wrong. They say "it happens"...the errors that is...look at another company....I've had Train systems in the past they worked great. Looking to replace mine....

Save your money and do not buy a Carrier Infinity System AC System!!!! Obviously this applies to high end products like the Carrier Infinity series HVAC products. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!

@ B Wade,

I have alluded to this several times, but I like to refer to it as the “dirty little secret” in the HVAC world, quality installation is a must. If you are going to buy the finest a/c equipment available, check your contractors credentials. Make sure he is properly licensed, is insured properly, has in hand Infinity training credentials, is NATE certified, knows how to do a proper heat load, knows how to calculate air flow, knows the best practical methods to install your system. I could go on and on. As a last bit of advice, make sure he has many years experience and employs qualified technicians who can pass a background check and pass a drug screen. If you are going to buy higher quality, make sure the installers are higher quality.

I have been with a Factory Authorized Carrier Dealer for a long time and I see, in all of these comments, an underlying theme. “Have your Infinity system installed by a highly qualified contractor.” You wouldn’t go to a Ford dealer for a Mercedes would you? This is a common theme we hear again and again when it comes to home hvac systems. A quality installation and contractor are musts or not only are you not going to get the best out of your unit, but you are also going to have some headaches to deal with.Greatly appreciate the Carrier Infinity pricing insight and overall review of the unit. Thanks for stopping by!

Todd,

Thanks for the great insight. This is a common theme we hear again and again when it comes to home hvac systems.
